Hollandse schilderFor van Gogh, art was a spiritual occupation, which he discovered at the age of 27, in 1880. It was a means, Vincent believed, of bringing concentrated on drawing and took farmers as his subjects, experimenting with all kinds of media, such as pen, ink and black chalk. Van Gogh’s early oil paintings similarly used a very dark palette and led in 1885 to the, now so famous, “Potato Eaters”.

Vincent van Gogh both saw and used colour as an emotional strength, and for him yellow signified love. Nieuw zelfportret van Van Gogh ontdekt

Experts from the Scottish museum National Galleries of Scotland (NGS) have discovered a new self-portrait of Vincent van Gogh, reports the Dutch newspaper NRC. The portrait is on the back of the canvas Head of a Peasant Woman with a White Cap from 1885 and was found thanks to an X-ray. The portrait is hidden under a thick layer of glue and cardboard. The work was probably made in 1887, when Van Gogh was living in Paris. Experts made the X-ray during an investigation into the painting of the peasant woman from Nuenen. A BBC journalist posted the X-ray on Twitter:   Chief Curator Lesley Stevenson tells the BBC she was “in shock” when she saw Van Gogh “looking at us”. “Obviously we were thrilled when we first saw the photo.” This is not the first time that Van Gogh has been shown to work on the backs of his paintings. The Dutch artist did this to save money. Head of a peasant woman with a white hat has been part of the collection of the Scottish Museum since 1960. In 1923 Evelyn St Croix Fleming bought the painting. Her son is best known as the creator of James Bond. In 1951 the piece went to Scotland and it was later donated to the NGS, where it remains today

Waarom sneed Van Gogh zijn oor af?

Een van de meest beruchte bizarre momenten in de kunstgeschiedenis vond plaats toen van Gogh zijn eigen oor afsneed. Waarom zou van Gogh zoiets doen? Er zijn een paar theorieën.
Sommige experts geloven dat van Gogh aan een psychose leed en geloofde dat hij boze geesten kon afweren door zijn oor op te offeren. Anderen geloven dat van Gogh simpelweg probeerde zijn vriend en collega-kunstenaar Paul Gauguin te shockeren, met wie hij op dat moment ruzie had.
Wat de echte reden ook was, van Goghs daad van zelfverminking had een diepgaand effect op zijn carrière. Nadat hij zijn oor had afgesneden, liet van Gogh zichzelf opnemen in een psychiatrisch ziekenhuis, waar hij enkele van zijn beroemdste werken schilderde, waaronder “De Sterrennacht.”
In de jaren na zijn ontslag uit het ziekenhuis bleef van Gogh worstelen met psychische aandoeningen, en uiteindelijk maakte hij een einde aan zijn leven. Hoewel van Goghs leven tragisch was, blijft zijn kunst mensen over de hele wereld inspireren.

Van Gogh stierf op 29 juli 1890 aan een schotwond. De wond was zelf toegebracht en van Gogh stierf twee dagen later aan zijn verwondingen. Het is onduidelijk waarom van Gogh ervoor koos om een einde aan zijn leven te maken, maar sommigen geloven dat het te wijten was aan zijn psychische toestand op dat moment.
Van Gogh worstelde zijn hele leven met psychische aandoeningen en stond bekend om zijn periodes van depressie. Hij kampte ook met alcoholisme en had een geschiedenis van zelfbeschadiging. In de jaren voorafgaand aan zijn dood verslechterde van Goghs psychische toestand en raakte hij steeds meer geïsoleerd.
Hij bleef schilderen tot het einde, maar zijn werk werd steeds donkerder en gewelddadiger. Op de dag dat hij stierf, liet de Nederlandse schilder een laatste brief achter voor zijn broer waarin hij afscheid nam en zijn hoop uitsprak dat zijn schilderijen ooit gewaardeerd zouden worden. Van Goghs nalatenschap is inderdaad voort blijven leven; hij wordt nu beschouwd als een van de meest invloedrijke kunstenaars van de post-impressionistische periode.
