Van Gogh Early Paintings

For van Gogh, art was a spiritual occupation, which he discovered at the age of 27, in 1880.

It was a means, Vincent believed, of bringing concentrated on drawing and took farmers as his subjects, experimenting with all kinds of media, such as pen, ink and black chalk.

Van Gogh’s early oil paintings similarly used a very dark palette and led in 1885 to the, now so famous, “Potato Eaters”.

New self-portrait of Van Gogh discovered

Experts from the Scottish museum National Galleries of Scotland (NGS) have discovered a new self-portrait of Vincent van Gogh, reports the Dutch newspaper NRC. The portrait is on the back of the canvas Head of a Peasant Woman with a White Cap from 1885 and was found thanks to an X-ray.

The portrait is hidden under a thick layer of glue and cardboard. The work was probably made in 1887, when Van Gogh was living in Paris. Experts made the X-ray during an investigation into the painting of the peasant woman from Nuenen.

Chief Curator Lesley Stevenson tells the BBC she was “in shock” when she saw Van Gogh “looking at us”. “Obviously we were thrilled when we first saw the photo.” This is not the first time that Van Gogh has been shown to work on the backs of his paintings. The Dutch artist did this to save money.

Head of a peasant woman with a white hat has been part of the collection of the Scottish Museum since 1960. In 1923 Evelyn St Croix Fleming bought the painting. Her son is best known as the creator of James Bond. In 1951 the piece went to Scotland and it was later donated to the NGS, where it remains today

Our Visit Notes

We last visited the Museum of Prostitution in February 2026. It took us 45 minutes to see the entire museum at our leisure. It was interesting! The museum also displays a replica of the interior of a window brothel. We were surprised by how small that space actually is. In that part of the museum, we saw a bed, a sink, a mirror, and not much else. During our visit on a Thursday afternoon, there was no line at the entrance. We were able to walk straight in, which was very pleasant. Visitors who do not want to learn anything about the Red Light District would be better off skipping this museum. It is also not suitable for people in wheelchairs.

Rembrandt Elephant Drawing

In the year 1637, a young albino elephant was brought Holland’s capital from Sri Lanka (formally known as Ceylon) and was the subject of a marvelous pencil drawing by Rembrandt. He was mesmerized by it. The animal even made an appearance on one of Rembrandt’s etchings called “Adam and Eve in Paradise”. See if you can find it inside. If not, then you can also go to the Nieuwe Batavierstraat 2. Here you’ll find a gablestone celebrating this famed elephant. It’s just a 4 minute walk.

Rembrandt House Etching

Every day, the demonstrations of the Rembrandt House show how etchings were printed back in the seventeenth century. The demonstrations are completely free of charge and are given in the former graphic workshop of Rembrandt. There are recurrent exhibitions showing pieces of art of contemporaries and predecessors of Rembrandt van Rijn. Also contemporary art is shown in the modern wing of the Rembrandt House Museum.

1578 was the year of Alteration. Amsterdam’s city council was Catholic but replaced by a Protestant one, and the Catholics were forced to hold services in private spaces. It’s an impossible-to-miss eye-catcher as you enter exhibition decided to Banksy. Other highlights are the ‘Girl with Balloon’,  ‘Keep It Real’ and ‘Laugh Now’. This exhibition isn’t authorised by the anonymous Banksy. The contents also weren’t curated in collaboration with Banksy.

Villa Alsberg on Museumplein in Amsterdam

Villa Alsberg is the home of the The Modern Contemporary (Moco) Museum. It’s an old townhouse in the heart of Amsterdam with a great view of Museumplein (Amsterdam’s museum district).

The villa was designed by Eduard Cuypers back in 1904. He was the nephew of the renowned Pierre Cuypers who designed both the Rijksmuseum (located opposite of the villa) and Amsterdam’s Central Station. This former privately owned villa was one of the first homes that were built along Museumplein.

It remained a family home until 1939. In that year the house was let out to priests from the local Nicolas School in Amsterdam. Later on the building was converted into law firm office.

Small, But Built To Impress

There is only one small drawback to the villa. It maybe a charming building but due to its compact size one can get the feeling of overcrowdedness during the more busy visiting hours.

Stedelijk Museum Wiki

The Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam was founded back in 1874. It’s Holland’s premier museum for modern and contemporary art. It was originally located in the Rijksmuseum  but was moved its current home back in 1895. The building was designed the Dutch architect Adriaan Willem Weissamn in a Neo-Renaissance style.

The museum is now one of three major museums on the Museumplein (museum district) in Amsterdam. In the first decade of the 21st century the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam was closed for a large-scale renovation. All in all the the renovation took 9 years to complete. In 2012, the museum reopened its doors for the public, with a much discussed new wing nicknamed “the bathtub”. This nickname speaks for itself when you see the newly added wing.

Although the new building clearly has a different appearance than the old one, it fits with the size of the building from 1895. There is a direct, seamless transition between the buildings on each floor.

For architect Mels Crouwel, the Stedelijk Museum by Willem Sandberg, the director who put the Stedelijk Museum on the international map, was the starting point for the new building.

“Sandberg stripped the interior of the Stedelijk of all its decorations and painted the walls white, creating a neutral background for art. Our plan for the exterior is based on the remaining architecture from the 19th century, with the addition of 21-century technology, and everything is painted white in Sandberg’s colour.”

Modern Interior

The interior of the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam is spacious, bright and airy. It’s an absolute joy to walk around the building and pass the many exebitions.  This is museum is a must-do for those who love their modern art and design. The collection at the museum is world class and permanent. It contains more than 90.000 objects dating from the seventies of the nineteenth century right up to the present. It also combines temporary inspired exhibitions  with of-the-wall installations. In this museum you get to see all the dominant design and art movements since the early twentieth century.

Second Renovation

In 2017, the ground floor of ‘the bathtub’ was completely redesigned. The exhibition design of the STEDEDIJKE BASE in the ABN AMRO Room was developed by AMO / Rem Koolhaas in collaboration with Federico Martelli.

It offers an innovative presentation method for the permanent collection. The experimental vision on exhibition making by former director Beatrix Ruf. The bold exhibition architecture and the latest technological developments together create an environment in which visitors can experience the collection via a freely chosen route.

Stedelijk Museum Highlights 

One of the highlights at the museum the section that focusses on the work of the modernist Dutch architect H.P. Berlage. Another part focuses on acclaimed American designers Ray and Charles Eames.

The Jewish Historical Museum is located at the Jewish Cultural Quarter (JCQ). It is made up of four former Ashkenazi synagogues. After you’ve picked up the free audio tour at the entrance, follow the signs through the maze-like museum to the Great Synagogue – the earliest and most impressive of the four synagogues – which dates back to 1671.

This will guide you to the start of the permanent exhibition, that provides a background on the religion by way of menorah, torahs and movies explaining traditional Jewish customs.

Make sure you don’t miss the little room marked Art Gallery, next to the main room, where you’ll see a ritual bath – also known as a mikvey – that was in use here between 1671 & 182. It was only discovered in 1987 when restoration work was done. Back in the synagogue, step up the spiral staircase to the top floor, which presents four centuries of history from the year 1600. This is the year when the first groups of Jews settled in the most tolerant city in the world: Amsterdam.

Amsterdam’s New Synagogue

The bordering New Synagogue gives a dynamic account of Jewish life in the Netherlands before, during and after the Second World War. It’s supported by photographs, artifacts, documents and exclusive interviews. Film content includes images of Jewish cultural hub The Tuschinski theater, made between 1930 and 1935, and the demolition of Westerbork transit camp in 1966. This was where Jews were held before they were put on trains bound for Sobibor, Bergen-Belsen, Theresienstadt and Auschwitz.
