Van Gogh Early Paintings

For van Gogh, art was a spiritual occupation, which he discovered at the age of 27, in 1880.

It was a means, Vincent believed, of bringing concentrated on drawing and took farmers as his subjects, experimenting with all kinds of media, such as pen, ink and black chalk.

Van Gogh’s early oil paintings similarly used a very dark palette and led in 1885 to the, now so famous, “Potato Eaters”.

Van Gogh Museum Sunflower Room

Among the museum’s many highlights is the Sunflower Room, which displays a selection of Van Gogh’s famous sunflower paintings.

The room also features a range of other Van Gogh masterpieces, including his renowned “The Bedroom” painting. Visitors can also see Van Gogh’s letters and personal effects, providing insight into his life and work.

Vincent van Gogh both saw and used colour as an emotional strength, and for him yellow signified love.

It features most in his “Sunflowers” series of work, which van Gogh painted in the summer of 1888 – all “in one rush”, because the flowers faded so quickly. Anticipating the arrival of mister Gauguin to share his studio, he wanted these pictures…..

With so much to see, the Sunflower Room is a must-visit for anyone interested in Van Gogh’s art.

New self-portrait of Van Gogh discovered

Experts from the Scottish museum National Galleries of Scotland (NGS) have discovered a new self-portrait of Vincent van Gogh, reports the Dutch newspaper NRC. The portrait is on the back of the canvas Head of a Peasant Woman with a White Cap from 1885 and was found thanks to an X-ray.

The portrait is hidden under a thick layer of glue and cardboard. The work was probably made in 1887, when Van Gogh was living in Paris. Experts made the X-ray during an investigation into the painting of the peasant woman from Nuenen.

A BBC journalist posted the X-ray on Twitter:

Chief Curator Lesley Stevenson tells the BBC she was “in shock” when she saw Van Gogh “looking at us”. “Obviously we were thrilled when we first saw the photo.” This is not the first time that Van Gogh has been shown to work on the backs of his paintings. The Dutch artist did this to save money.

Head of a peasant woman with a white hat has been part of the collection of the Scottish Museum since 1960. In 1923 Evelyn St Croix Fleming bought the painting. Her son is best known as the creator of James Bond. In 1951 the piece went to Scotland and it was later donated to the NGS, where it remains today

Rijksmuseum Library

The Dutch architect Cuypers had various principles in building Amsterdam’s Rijksmuseum. Cuypers was interested in connecting modern components with artisanal craftsmanship.

Furthermore, he wanted the fundemental anatomy of the Rijksmuseum to remain visible. In Rijksmuseum’s library, the iron load-bearing construction is plain to see. A lot elements were restored to their original state during the renovation. Did you know that Cuypers designed a large skylight to make it possible to read by daylight? When the Rijksmuseum opened in 1885, reading by daylight, rather than by flickering gaslight, was super modern. Cuypers also designed Amsterdam’s Central Station by the way.

The Museum of Prostitution in Amsterdam, also known as Red Light Secrets, is one of the city’s most unusual and talked-about museums. Located in the heart of De Wallen, this small but memorable attraction takes visitors inside the world behind the red-lit windows of Amsterdam’s Red Light District.

If you are deciding whether the Museum of Prostitution is worth visiting, this guide covers what to expect, how long you need, highlights inside, and where to book tickets online.

What Is the Museum of Prostitution?

The Museum of Prostitution Amsterdam is the world’s first museum dedicated to sex work. Set inside a former brothel on Oudezijds Achterburgwal, the museum gives visitors a rare look at the history, realities, and misconceptions surrounding legal sex work in Amsterdam.

Rather than being a traditional art museum, Red Light Secrets is an interactive experience. You walk through reconstructed rooms, sit behind a red-lit window, listen to personal audio stories, and learn more about the daily reality of people working in the industry.

What makes the Museum of Prostitution worth visiting is that it is not only provocative, but also educational. The exhibits focus on human stories, safety, stigma, working conditions, and the social debate around prostitution in Amsterdam and beyond.

Our Visit Notes

We last visited the Museum of Prostitution in February 2026. It took us 45 minutes to see the entire museum at our leisure. It was interesting! The museum also displays a replica of the interior of a window brothel. We were surprised by how small that space actually is. In that part of the museum, we saw a bed, a sink, a mirror, and not much else. During our visit on a Thursday afternoon, there was no line at the entrance. We were able to walk straight in, which was very pleasant. Visitors who do not want to learn anything about the Red Light District would be better off skipping this museum. It is also not suitable for people in wheelchairs.

Museum of Prostitution Tickets, Opening Hours & Location

The museum is located at Oudezijds Achterburgwal 60H, 1012 DP Amsterdam, in the middle of Amsterdam’s Red Light District. It is an easy walk from Nieuwmarkt and Amsterdam Central Station.

Is the Museum of Prostitution Worth Visiting?

Yes — for many visitors, the Museum of Prostitution is worth it because it offers something you will not find elsewhere in Amsterdam. It is compact, easy to fit into an itinerary, and gives genuine context to a part of the city that many tourists see but do not really understand.

This museum is best for adults interested in Amsterdam history, social issues, the Red Light District, and unusual museums. If you enjoy museums with personal stories and immersive displays rather than large collections, Red Light Secrets is a strong choice.

It may be less suitable for visitors looking for a major half-day museum or a family attraction. The museum is small, but the experience is memorable and often more thought-provoking than people expect.

What You See Inside Red Light Secrets

Inside the Museum of Prostitution Amsterdam, visitors move through a series of rooms and installations that reveal what working life in a Red Light District brothel can be like. The museum combines historic context with personal testimony, making it both eye-opening and accessible.

Highlights inside include:

Entering a former brothel in Amsterdam’s Red Light District

Sitting behind a real red-lit window and seeing the street from the worker’s perspective

Listening to audio stories and reflections connected to sex work

Learning about stigma, safety, rights, and the legal reality in the Netherlands

Exploring themed rooms and interactive displays

Reading anonymous confessions left by previous visitors

One of the most talked-about moments is sitting behind the red-lit window yourself. It is a simple but surprisingly effective way to understand how exposed and performative that position can feel.

Why Red Light Secrets Is Different from Other Amsterdam Museums

Amsterdam has many famous museums, but the Museum of Prostitution stands out because it focuses on a part of the city that is often photographed, discussed, and misunderstood. Instead of sensationalizing the Red Light District, the museum tries to add human perspective to it.

The experience is not about glamour. It is about seeing beyond stereotypes and hearing stories that many visitors would otherwise never encounter. That makes Red Light Secrets Amsterdam one of the most distinctive cultural stops in De Wallen.

Tips for Visiting the Museum of Prostitution

Book online first if you want a smooth visit and the best choice of entry times.

Go earlier in the day for a quieter experience, or visit in the evening if you want to combine it with the atmosphere of the Red Light District.

Allow about one hour to see the museum properly without rushing.

Wear comfortable shoes because the surrounding streets are cobbled and central Amsterdam involves a lot of walking.

Stay respectful when visiting De Wallen — this is a residential neighborhood as well as a major tourist area.

History of the Rembrandt House

The Rembrandt House Museum is not just a building where the famed Dutch artist lived; it is a historical monument with a rich past. Originally built in 1606, the house was purchased by Rembrandt in 1639 at the height of his fame and became his home until he went bankrupt in 1656. The house witnessed the creation of some of his most significant works. After Rembrandt’s residency, the house changed hands several times before being opened as a museum in 1911. The museum has since been carefully restored to reflect its 17th-century condition, providing visitors with an authentic view of Rembrandt’s life and times. The history of this house is meticulously preserved, allowing visitors to step back in time and walk through the same rooms that Rembrandt did, offering an immersive glimpse into the artist’s world.

This beautiful old building in the centre of Holland’s capital, this is now a museum. This was the place where the great Dutch painter Rembrandt worked and lived from the year 1639 till 1658. Built in 1606, the year in which Rembrandt was born, this beautiful shuttered house was where the great master spent 19 years of his life, after which bankruptcy forced Rembrandt to leave.

Rembrandt’s Life and Work

The Rembrandt House Museum serves as a testament to the life and work of Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn, one of the most important figures in Dutch art history and a giant of the Baroque period. This was not only his home but also his studio, where he painted, taught, and sold his works. During the 20 years Rembrandt lived in this house, he created many of his masterpieces, including renowned portraits and biblical scenes. The museum highlights this period of his life, showcasing how his art evolved and how his personal life, including tragedies and financial struggles, impacted his work. By providing context to his creations with exhibits of his belongings and works, the museum offers a comprehensive insight into Rembrandt’s artistry and personal history.

Collection and Exhibitions

At the heart of the Rembrandt House Museum is its impressive collection of Rembrandt’s etchings, which are considered as significant as his paintings. The museum boasts an almost complete collection of his work in this medium, showing his skill and innovation as a printmaker. The permanent collection also includes a number of his paintings, providing a broad overview of his artistic repertoire. Additionally, the museum hosts temporary exhibitions that can range from displays of contemporary artists inspired by Rembrandt to thematic exhibitions that delve deeper into different aspects of 17th-century art and culture. These exhibitions are often enriched with loans from other major museums and private collections, offering a fresh perspective on Rembrandt’s influence on the art world.

An inventory from the Dutch Golden Age – the 17th-century – was used to carefully refurbish the house with furniture, objects and art Rembrandt’s day to create the Rembrandt House Museum.

Visit the studio, the living quarters, the old kitchen of Rembrandt van Rijn and imagine what’s like to live in the 17th-century. The Rembrandt House describes the story of Rembrandt the man, painter, teacher, collector, inspirer, entrepreneur and resident of Amsterdam. The collection of Golden Age pieces of art gives an impression of the world and surroundings of Rembrandt van Rijn.

This museum also owns a roughly complete collection of etchings made by Rembrandt, a selection of which is regularly on display.

Rembrandt Elephant Drawing

In the year 1637, a young albino elephant was brought Holland’s capital from Sri Lanka (formally known as Ceylon) and was the subject of a marvelous pencil drawing by Rembrandt. He was mesmerized by it. The animal even made an appearance on one of Rembrandt’s etchings called “Adam and Eve in Paradise”. See if you can find it inside. If not, then you can also go to the Nieuwe Batavierstraat 2. Here you’ll find a gablestone celebrating this famed elephant. It’s just a 4 minute walk.

Rembrandt House Etching

Every day, the demonstrations of the Rembrandt House show how etchings were printed back in the seventeenth century. The demonstrations are completely free of charge and are given in the former graphic workshop of Rembrandt. There are recurrent exhibitions showing pieces of art of contemporaries and predecessors of Rembrandt van Rijn. Also contemporary art is shown in the modern wing of the Rembrandt House Museum.

Educational Activities and Workshops

Education is a cornerstone of the Rembrandt House Museum’s mission. The museum offers a variety of workshops and activities aimed at both adults and children, allowing visitors to engage with Rembrandt’s techniques in a hands-on way. One can participate in etching workshops to understand the complexity and skill involved in this art form, or take part in painting workshops that mirror Rembrandt’s own methods. For those looking for a more in-depth understanding of the artist, the museum provides educational tours and lectures by experts in the field. These programs are designed to provide a deeper appreciation of Rembrandt’s work and his contribution to art history, making the museum a place of learning and discovery.

This museum is really worth a visit!

1578 was the year of Alteration. Amsterdam’s city council was Catholic but replaced by a Protestant one, and the Catholics were forced to hold services in private spaces. Our Lord in the Attic (in Dutch: Ons Lieve Heer op Solder) is one of the two clandestine existing churches in Amsterdam that are still open for public today.

“Our Lord In The Attic” translates into “Ons’ Lieve Heer op Solder” in Dutch.

In Our Lord in the Attic in Amsterdam you’ll find a uniquely preserved seventeenth-century canal house dating back to the Dutch Golden Age. This museum will not only give you an idea about how people lived in those days, it also tells you about the religious history and tolerance in the Netherlands.

The main religion in the 17th century was Protestantism; Our Lord in the Attic is the last, and best-preserved example of a “hidden church,” in which Catholics, who were unable to worship in public, held services. It’s the oldest museum in the city, second only to the world-famous Rijksmuseum.

Ons Lieve Heer op Solder Museum

Our Lord in the Attic is located on the oldest canal of the city – the Oudezijds Voorburgwal. A special place in the Red Light District that everyone should see when visiting Amsterdam. The museum completed a multi-year restoration project in late 2015 and was re-opened by the Dutch queen. This hidden gem in Amsterdam definitely worth a visit if you want to learn more about Dutch history and if you want to see how people lived back then.

Overview of Moco Museum

The Moco Museum, which stands for Modern Contemporary Museum Amsterdam, is a boutique museum with a unique collection that features the works of some of the art world’s most groundbreaking and avant-garde figures. Nestled in the heart of Amsterdam, the museum was established with the vision of bringing modern and contemporary art to the wider public. The building itself is a sight to behold, marrying historical architecture with a modern twist that reflects the innovative spirit of the art it houses. The museum was founded by Lionel and Kim Logchies, who envisioned a space where the works of icons like Banksy and Warhol could spark conversations about contemporary society.

Moco Museum Amsterdam is an unique experience that is well suited for a wide audience. This is a museum that you don’t want to miss during your stay in Amsterdam, especially if you like modern pieces of art.

Banksy Artwork

This new museum was founded in April 2016. Artists include the likes of Andy Warhol – famous for his popart – , Roy Lichtenstein and the anonymous Banksy.

Banksy is a mysterious yet world famous British artist who is known for his humorous and political street art. His street art can be found all over the world. The City of London even has made maps with markings of all the locations of Banksy art. His indoor pieces – unique works on actual canvas, paper and wood – have had far less exposure.

Moco Museum Amsterdam has several of his famous street pieces on exhibition and also a large number of his indoor works, including works on canvas. His giant ‘Beanfield’ painting is one of then, a wonderful piece that is displayed on the ground level.

It’s an impossible-to-miss eye-catcher as you enter exhibition decided to Banksy. Other highlights are the ‘Girl with Balloon’, ‘Keep It Real’ and ‘Laugh Now’. This exhibition isn’t authorised by the anonymous Banksy. The contents also weren’t curated in collaboration with Banksy.

Villa Alsberg on Museumplein in Amsterdam

Villa Alsberg is the home of the The Modern Contemporary (Moco) Museum. It’s an old townhouse in the heart of Amsterdam with a great view of Museumplein (Amsterdam’s museum district).

The villa was designed by Eduard Cuypers back in 1904. He was the nephew of the renowned Pierre Cuypers who designed both the Rijksmuseum (located opposite of the villa) and Amsterdam’s Central Station. This former privately owned villa was one of the first homes that were built along Museumplein.

It remained a family home until 1939. In that year the house was let out to priests from the local Nicolas School in Amsterdam. Later on the building was converted into law firm office.

Small, But Built To Impress

Maximum effort was put in to ensure that the breathtaking villa makes a big impact on all visitors. The building itself adds an extra layer to the whole Moco Museum Amsterdam experience. There is only one small drawback to the villa. It maybe a charming building but due to its compact size one can get the feeling of overcrowdedness during the more busy visiting hours.

In 2009 the building that featured the ‘Heart Boy’ mural was selected for demolition. The owner removed the mural and kept it in his possession until he sold it to Moco Museum Amsterdam. Banksy considered variations of this work so special that he prominently featured it in his ‘Wall and Piece’ book. The ‘Heart Boy’ stencil can be found in three different locations throughout London, including the roundabout at Old Street, Tottenham Court Road, and on Rivington Street in Shoreditch.

Online Tickets For Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam

We offer the best tickets for this modern art museum situated at Amsterdam’s Museumplein, with skip-the-line entry!

Stedelijk Museum Wiki

The Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam was founded back in 1874. It’s Holland’s premier museum for modern and contemporary art. It was originally located in the Rijksmuseum but was moved its current home back in 1895. The building was designed the Dutch architect Adriaan Willem Weissamn in a Neo-Renaissance style.

The museum is now one of three major museums on the Museumplein (museum district) in Amsterdam. In the first decade of the 21st century the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam was closed for a large-scale renovation. All in all the the renovation took 9 years to complete. In 2012, the museum reopened its doors for the public, with a much discussed new wing nicknamed “the bathtub”. This nickname speaks for itself when you see the newly added wing.

“The Bathtub” exterior

Although the new building clearly has a different appearance than the old one, it fits with the size of the building from 1895. There is a direct, seamless transition between the buildings on each floor.

For architect Mels Crouwel, the Stedelijk Museum by Willem Sandberg, the director who put the Stedelijk Museum on the international map, was the starting point for the new building.

“Sandberg stripped the interior of the Stedelijk of all its decorations and painted the walls white, creating a neutral background for art. Our plan for the exterior is based on the remaining architecture from the 19th century, with the addition of 21-century technology, and everything is painted white in Sandberg’s colour.”

Modern Interior

The interior of the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam is spacious, bright and airy. It’s an absolute joy to walk around the building and pass the many exebitions. This is museum is a must-do for those who love their modern art and design. The collection at the museum is world class and permanent. It contains more than 90.000 objects dating from the seventies of the nineteenth century right up to the present. It also combines temporary inspired exhibitions with of-the-wall installations. In this museum you get to see all the dominant design and art movements since the early twentieth century.

Presented artists include: Wassily Kandisnksy, Jackson Pollock, Willem de Koning, Karel Appel, Jackson Pollock, Andy Warhol, Henri Matisse and Mark Chagal.

It offers an innovative presentation method for the permanent collection. The experimental vision on exhibition making by former director Beatrix Ruf. The bold exhibition architecture and the latest technological developments together create an environment in which visitors can experience the collection via a freely chosen route.

The Stedelijk Museum is located at Museumplein together with the Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum.

Stedelijk Museum Highlights

One of the highlights at the museum the section that focusses on the work of the modernist Dutch architect H.P. Berlage. Another part focuses on acclaimed American designers Ray and Charles Eames.

All the artworks in the museum are described in English but we’d advice everybody to use the audio tour included with this ticket.

If you’re in a hurry we’d advice you to focus on the homegrown talent that is on display. Collections by the art movement of De Stijl and C0BrA are a must see in our humble opinion.

In the exhibition Migrants in Paris, the Stedelijk Museum highlights the lives of different artists who migrated to the French capital in the early 20th century. The museum exhibits works by Pablo Picasso, Piet Mondriaan and Kees van Dongen, among others. For the first time in more than sixty years, the museum’s 38 collection of Chagalls is on display. A number of paintings have been specially restored for the exhibition.

The artists, photographers and graphic designers who are featured in the current exhibition migrated to Paris in the first half of the last century, which was then regarded as the art center of the world. With the exhibition, the Stedelijk Museum wants to show that the artists – despite their success – often felt outsiders in the French capital.

A chance to see a Rothko and Pollock alongside a little walk through of some of Van Gogh’s work. The permenant collection was brilliant, a definite must see for anyone interest in modern art. Don’t forget to pick up the audio guide, it’s free and goes in depth into some of the pieces!”

Jewish Historical Museum Amsterdam

Jewish Historical Museum Tickets often sell out fast—don’t miss your chance to explore Amsterdam’s rich Jewish heritage!

Overview of the Jewish Historical Museum

The Jewish Historical Museum is located in the heart of Amsterdam. It’s part of the Jewish Cultural Quarter and gives visitors a deep look into Jewish history, culture, and religion.

The museum is made up of four old synagogues. These historic buildings now hold permanent and temporary exhibits. You’ll find artwork, religious items, films, and stories from the Jewish community in the Netherlands.

This museum is great for both adults and kids. It shares personal stories, shows rare objects, and even has a children’s museum section.

Highlights of the Museum:

Four historic synagogue buildings

Interactive displays

Family-friendly exhibits

Audio guides available in multiple languages

Whether you’re interested in history or culture, the Jewish Historical Museum offers a powerful and educational experience.

The Jewish Historical Museum is located at the Jewish Cultural Quarter (JCQ). It is made up of four former Ashkenazi synagogues. After you’ve picked up the free audio tour at the entrance, follow the signs through the maze-like museum to the Great Synagogue – the earliest and most impressive of the four synagogues – which dates back to 1671.

This will guide you to the start of the permanent exhibition, that provides a background on the religion by way of menorah, torahs and movies explaining traditional Jewish customs.

Make sure you don’t miss the little room marked Art Gallery, next to the main room, where you’ll see a ritual bath – also known as a mikvey – that was in use here between 1671 & 182. It was only discovered in 1987 when restoration work was done. Back in the synagogue, step up the spiral staircase to the top floor, which presents four centuries of history from the year 1600. This is the year when the first groups of Jews settled in the most tolerant city in the world: Amsterdam.

Amsterdam’s New Synagogue

The bordering New Synagogue gives a dynamic account of Jewish life in the Netherlands before, during and after the Second World War. It’s supported by photographs, artifacts, documents and exclusive interviews. Film content includes images of Jewish cultural hub The Tuschinski theater, made between 1930 and 1935, and the demolition of Westerbork transit camp in 1966. This was where Jews were held before they were put on trains bound for Sobibor, Bergen-Belsen, Theresienstadt and Auschwitz.

The Jewish Historical Museum stages appealing limited exhibitions throughout the year. There’s an interactive Children’s Museum centred around a usual modern Jewish family living in Holland’s capital.

Completely Renovated In 2011

Between 2007 and 2011 the National Maritime Museum was extensively renovated. Reception rooms, public spaces, restaurant and the library were completely redesigned. The goal was to modernise the building, while at the same time retaining the feeling of a 17th-century warehouse. The absolute highlight of the renovation is the roofing over the courtyard. It consists of thousands of pieces of glass in a metal frame. The compass lines of old nautical charts inspired the design.
