<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Amsterdam Rijksmuseum: Ultimate Guide in 2026</h2>

<a class="maxbutton-5 maxbutton maxbutton-street-markets-in-amsterdam" title="CLICK HERE!" href="https://www.tiqets.com/en/amsterdam-attractions-c75061/tickets-for-rijksmuseum-skip-the-ticket-line-p703796/?partner=tossitonline"><span class='mb-text'>I WANT TICKETS NOW</span></a>

<p><br>The Rijksmuseum is Holland&#8217;s premier art trove, showing Rembrandts, Vermeer&#8217;s and 7500 other masterpieces over 1,5 km of galleries. </p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Overview and Historical Significance</strong></h2>

<p>The Rijksmuseum is the most famous museum in the Netherlands. It opened in 1800 and moved to its current building in 1885. The museum tells the story of over 800 years of Dutch history, from the Middle Ages to today.</p>

<p>Located in the heart of Amsterdam, the museum is a symbol of Dutch art and culture. People from all over the world come to see its impressive art collection. It is home to thousands of paintings, sculptures, and historical objects.</p>

<p>One reason the Rijksmuseum stands out is because it houses masterpieces from the Dutch Golden Age. This was a time when Dutch art, trade, and science flourished. Artists like Rembrandt, Vermeer, and Frans Hals helped shape this era.</p>

<p><strong>Quick facts about the Rijksmuseum:</strong></p>

<figure class="wp-block-table"><table class="has-fixed-layout"><thead><tr><th>Feature</th><th>Detail</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td>Location</td><td>Museumplein, Amsterdam</td></tr><tr><td>Year Opened</td><td>1800 (current building in 1885)</td></tr><tr><td>Collection Size</td><td>Over 1 million objects</td></tr><tr><td>Annual Visitors (2024)</td><td>2.7 million+</td></tr></tbody></table></figure>

<p>Visiting the Rijksmuseum feels like walking through a timeline of Dutch history. It&#8217;s more than just a museum—it&#8217;s a national treasure. Whether you love art, history, or architecture, this place is worth seeing.</p>

<p>To escape the biggest crowds, visit the Rijksmuseum after 3 pm. Or visit it during a sunny day. Or pre-book tickets online, which provides fast-track entry.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Must-See Masterpieces in 202</strong>6</h2>

<p>In 2026, the Rijksmuseum continues to amaze with both classic and new exhibits. One of the top reasons people visit is to see Rembrandt’s&nbsp;<em>The Night Watch</em>. This massive painting is a Dutch masterpiece and has its own special room.</p>

<p>Other popular artworks you can’t miss include:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Johannes Vermeer’s</strong>&nbsp;<em>The Milkmaid</em>&nbsp;– a quiet moment of daily life, full of color and detail.</li>

<li><strong>Frans Hals’</strong>&nbsp;<em>The Merry Drinker</em>&nbsp;– a fun portrait showing Dutch life.</li>

<li><strong>Vincent van Gogh’s</strong>&nbsp;<em>Self-Portrait</em>&nbsp;– one of his early works, full of emotion.</li>
</ul>

<p>In 2026, the museum is also showcasing a&nbsp;<strong>new exhibit on Dutch colonial history</strong>, including artifacts and documents from the 17th century. This exhibit helps visitors understand the full story of the Netherlands—both the good and the difficult parts.</p>

<p><strong>Top 5 Masterpieces to See:</strong></p>

<figure class="wp-block-table"><table class="has-fixed-layout"><thead><tr><th>Artist</th><th>Artwork</th><th>Gallery Location</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td>Rembrandt</td><td>The Night Watch</td><td>Gallery of Honour</td></tr><tr><td>Vermeer</td><td>The Milkmaid</td><td>Floor 2, Room 2.20</td></tr><tr><td>Frans Hals</td><td>The Merry Drinker</td><td>Floor 2, Room 2.23</td></tr><tr><td>Van Gogh</td><td>Self-Portrait</td><td>Floor 2, Room 2.15</td></tr><tr><td>Jan Steen</td><td>The Feast of Saint Nicholas</td><td>Floor 2, Room 2.26</td></tr></tbody></table></figure>

<p>These artworks are beautifully displayed with plenty of space and lighting. Many also include digital screens with stories behind the pieces.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Modern Upgrades and Visitor Experience</strong></h2>

<p>The Rijksmuseum has changed a lot in recent years. In 2026, it’s easier than ever to enjoy your visit. New technology, better crowd control, and mobile-friendly guides have improved the overall experience.</p>

<p>Here are some&nbsp;<strong>upgrades visitors will enjoy in 202</strong>6:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Digital ticketing</strong>&nbsp;with timed entry to avoid lines.</li>

<li><strong>Augmented reality (AR) tours</strong>&nbsp;that bring art to life.</li>

<li><strong>Free Wi-Fi</strong>&nbsp;and app-based guides in 10+ languages.</li>

<li><strong>Sustainable cafes and rest areas</strong>&nbsp;with local food options.</li>
</ul>

<p>If you visit during peak season (spring and summer), booking your tickets in advance is smart. The museum now limits the number of daily visitors, so it never feels too crowded.</p>

<p><strong>Tips for a smooth visit:</strong></p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Book online to skip the ticket line.</li>

<li>Arrive early in the morning or late afternoon.</li>

<li>Use the Rijksmuseum app to plan your route.</li>
</ul>

<p>There’s also a new&nbsp;<strong>&#8220;Family Trail&#8221;</strong>&nbsp;for kids. It’s interactive and helps young visitors explore art in a fun way. The museum is now more welcoming for all ages and abilities.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Holland&#8217;s Premier Art Trove</strong></h2>

<p>Originally the work of 19th-century architect <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pierre_Cuypers" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Pierre Cuypers</a>, the galleries housing the world-famous selection of Dutch art and artifacts now benefit from a modern reworking of space and light. </p>

<p>The assemblage, too, has been expanded, restored and rethought. Displayed in 80 galleries over four departments, it presents a chronological overview of Dutch art.<br></p>

<p></p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Dutch Golden Age</strong>: 17th-Century</h4>

<figure class="wp-block-image"><img fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" width="950" height="750" src="https://toursinamsterdam.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/Rijksmuseum-Johannes-Vermeer-Milkmaid.jpg" alt="The Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam also shows The Milkmaid by Vermeer" class="wp-image-1099" srcset="https://www.toursinamsterdam.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/Rijksmuseum-Johannes-Vermeer-Milkmaid.jpg 950w, https://www.toursinamsterdam.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/Rijksmuseum-Johannes-Vermeer-Milkmaid-300x237.jpg 300w, https://www.toursinamsterdam.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/Rijksmuseum-Johannes-Vermeer-Milkmaid-768x606.jpg 768w" sizes="(max-width: 950px) 100vw, 950px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><em>The Milkmaid painted by Dutch artist Johannes Vermeer</em>.</figcaption></figure>

<p>The Golden Age art-works are the highlights in the Rijksmuseum. Feast your eyes on beautiful still life pairings; noblemen in ruffled collars and landscapes bathed in pale yellow light. The Night Watch of famous Dutch painter Rembrandt van Rijn takes pride of place. Initially named Company of Frans Banning Cocq (the leader of the militia&#8217;s), the Night Watch title was bestowed many years later due the the fact that the multiple layers of varnish that Rembrandt had applied to the painting had darkened. This gave the impression it was evening.</p>

<a class="maxbutton-5 maxbutton maxbutton-street-markets-in-amsterdam" title="CLICK HERE!" href="https://www.tiqets.com/en/amsterdam-attractions-c75061/tickets-for-rijksmuseum-skip-the-ticket-line-p703796/?partner=tossitonline"><span class='mb-text'>I WANT TICKETS NOW</span></a>

<p></p>

<figure class="wp-block-image"><img decoding="async" width="950" height="750" src="https://toursinamsterdam.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/Rijksmuseum-Rembrandt-Staalmeesters.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-1101" srcset="https://www.toursinamsterdam.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/Rijksmuseum-Rembrandt-Staalmeesters.jpg 950w, https://www.toursinamsterdam.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/Rijksmuseum-Rembrandt-Staalmeesters-300x237.jpg 300w, https://www.toursinamsterdam.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/Rijksmuseum-Rembrandt-Staalmeesters-768x606.jpg 768w" sizes="(max-width: 950px) 100vw, 950px" /></figure>

<p>Other must-sees are obviously the typical Dutch Delftware (blue-and-white pottery), detailed 17th-century doll houses and the new Asian-Pavilion in the garden of the museum.</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Rijksmuseum Doll Houses</strong></h4>

<figure class="wp-block-image"><img decoding="async" width="950" height="375" src="https://toursinamsterdam.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Rijksmuseum-Amsterdam-doll-houses.jpg" alt="Rijksmuseum Amsterdam Doll Houses" class="wp-image-978" srcset="https://www.toursinamsterdam.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Rijksmuseum-Amsterdam-doll-houses.jpg 950w, https://www.toursinamsterdam.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Rijksmuseum-Amsterdam-doll-houses-300x118.jpg 300w, https://www.toursinamsterdam.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Rijksmuseum-Amsterdam-doll-houses-768x303.jpg 768w" sizes="(max-width: 950px) 100vw, 950px" /></figure>

<p>Fun fact: The doll houses were once owned by two of Amsterdam&#8217;s wealthy women collectors: Petronella Dunois &amp; Petronella Oortman. Made to scale they show exactly what the town houses of the wealthy women were like. </p>

<p>In fact, madame Portman went to such lengths to furnish her dollhouse with exquisite miniature items of silverware, glass, furniture and tiny pictures, that it eventually cost her as much money as an actual canal-house would have done.</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Renaissance Art</strong></h4>

<p>Galleries at Level 0 show paintings from the Middle Ages and Renaissance in the Netherlands and Italy. The eponymous creation by the Master of the Virgo inter Virgines is an impressive expression of female tenderness, while a new addition, Piero Torrigiani&#8217;s terra-cotta bust of &#8220;The Virgin as Mater Dolorosa&#8221;, offers another touching look of maternal devotion.</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Rijksmuseum Gallery of Honor</strong></h4>

<figure class="wp-block-image"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="950" height="376" src="https://toursinamsterdam.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Rijksmuseum-Rembrandt-Night-Watch.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-977" srcset="https://www.toursinamsterdam.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Rijksmuseum-Rembrandt-Night-Watch.jpg 950w, https://www.toursinamsterdam.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Rijksmuseum-Rembrandt-Night-Watch-300x119.jpg 300w, https://www.toursinamsterdam.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Rijksmuseum-Rembrandt-Night-Watch-768x304.jpg 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 950px) 100vw, 950px" /></figure>

<p>From Level 0, go straight to Level 2. Here, more than 30 galleries celebrate the Golden Age of Dutch art in the 17th-century, when the Netherlands became a world power. The long Gallery of Honor forms the backbone of the whole collection.</p>

<a class="maxbutton-5 maxbutton maxbutton-street-markets-in-amsterdam" title="CLICK HERE!" href="https://www.tiqets.com/en/amsterdam-attractions-c75061/tickets-for-rijksmuseum-skip-the-ticket-line-p703796/?partner=tossitonline"><span class='mb-text'>I WANT TICKETS NOW</span></a>

<p></p>

<p>Elegantly showcased against the gray surface of the Rijksmuseum alcoves and softly lit from above, still lives, portraits and genre paintings by the Dutch and Belgium masters come to life. They include the latest two additions, Jan Steen&#8217;s &#8220;A Burgomaster of Delft an his Daughter&#8221; and the arresting landscape &#8220;The Golden Bend in the Herengracht&#8221; by Gerrit Berckheyde, together with Frans Hals&#8217;s &#8220;Merry Drinker&#8221; and Pieter de Hooch&#8217;s alluring &#8220;A Mother&#8217;s Duty&#8221; &#8211; the &#8220;duty being the removal of nits from her child&#8217;s hair.</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Rembrandt&#8217;s Night Watch</strong></h4>

<figure class="wp-block-image"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="950" height="375" src="https://toursinamsterdam.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Rijksmuseum-Rembrandt-van-Rijn-night-watch.jpg" alt="Rijksmuseum Rembrandt's Night Watch." class="wp-image-972" srcset="https://www.toursinamsterdam.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Rijksmuseum-Rembrandt-van-Rijn-night-watch.jpg 950w, https://www.toursinamsterdam.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Rijksmuseum-Rembrandt-van-Rijn-night-watch-300x118.jpg 300w, https://www.toursinamsterdam.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Rijksmuseum-Rembrandt-van-Rijn-night-watch-768x303.jpg 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 950px) 100vw, 950px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><em>The Night Watch is perhaps the most famous Dutch painting.</em></figcaption></figure>

<p>The goal at the end of the Gallery of Honor is Rembrandt&#8217;s, the enormous, and famous group portrait of local militia once called &#8220;a thunderbolt of genius&#8221; and the only piece of art still it its original position in the Rijksmuseum.</p>

<p>After losing 3 children in their infancy, in 1642 Saskia and Rembrandt&#8217;s son Titus was born. One year later, Saskia died and business went downhill. Rembrandt&#8217;s impressive group portrait The Night Watch (1641) was hailed by art critics. </p>

<p>However, some of the influential people Rembrandt depicted were not pleased. Every subject had paid 100 guilders (the currency of the Netherlands from the 17th century until 2002, when it was replaced by the euro), and some men were not happy at being shoved in the background.</p>

<p>In response, Rembrandt told them where they shove their complaints. After that, Rembrandt van Rijn received far fewer orders</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="950" height="1000" src="https://toursinamsterdam.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Rembrandt-van-Rijn-Self-Portrait-Shadess.jpg" alt="Rembrandt Self portrait in Amsterdam Museum" class="wp-image-950" srcset="https://www.toursinamsterdam.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Rembrandt-van-Rijn-Self-Portrait-Shadess.jpg 950w, https://www.toursinamsterdam.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Rembrandt-van-Rijn-Self-Portrait-Shadess-285x300.jpg 285w, https://www.toursinamsterdam.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Rembrandt-van-Rijn-Self-Portrait-Shadess-768x808.jpg 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 950px) 100vw, 950px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><em>This beautiful self portrait from Rembrandt is a must-see!</em></figcaption></figure>

<p>Rembrandt began an affair with his son&#8217;s tutor, <a aria-label="Geertje Dircx (opens in a new tab)" href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geertje_Dircx" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Geertje Dircx</a>, but kicked her out a couple years later when he fell for the new au pair, Hendrickje Stoffels.&nbsp;In 1654 Hendrickje gave birth to Rembrandt&#8217;s daughter Cornelia. </p>

<p>People did not take kindly to Rembrandt&#8217;s lifestyle and his spiraling debts, and in 1656 he applied for &#8220;cessio bonorum&#8221; (a voluntary surrender of goods by a debtor to his creditors). Rembrandt&#8217;s house and rich art collection were sold and he moved to Rozengracht 184 in Amsterdam&#8217;s Jordaan area.</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Rijksmuseum Library by Pierre Cuypers</strong></h4>

<figure class="wp-block-image"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="950" height="700" src="https://toursinamsterdam.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Rijksmuseum-Cuypers-Library.jpg" alt="Rijksmuseum Library Visit" class="wp-image-980" srcset="https://www.toursinamsterdam.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Rijksmuseum-Cuypers-Library.jpg 950w, https://www.toursinamsterdam.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Rijksmuseum-Cuypers-Library-300x221.jpg 300w, https://www.toursinamsterdam.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Rijksmuseum-Cuypers-Library-768x566.jpg 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 950px) 100vw, 950px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><em>This library was made by the same architect who designed Amsterdam&#8217;s Central Station.</em></figcaption></figure>

<p>Before leaving the Rijksmuseum to explore its marvelous gardens, go to Level 1, to the gorgeous art library by Dutch architect Pierre Cuypers. The library has been renewed to its original stat and remains a brilliant example of Cuypers richly decorative, yet exquisite, interior design.</p>

<p>The library&#8217;s reading room is opening for public and visitors will find iPads for browsing the Rijksmuseum&#8217;s collection further, as well as WiFi access.</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Rijksmuseum Garden</strong></h4>

<figure class="wp-block-image"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="950" height="375" src="https://toursinamsterdam.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/rijksmuseum-garden.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-1362" srcset="https://www.toursinamsterdam.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/rijksmuseum-garden.jpg 950w, https://www.toursinamsterdam.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/rijksmuseum-garden-300x118.jpg 300w, https://www.toursinamsterdam.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/rijksmuseum-garden-768x303.jpg 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 950px) 100vw, 950px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><em>The garden of the Rijksmuseum is free to enter and extra beautiful in summers.</em></figcaption></figure>

<p>This is one of a group of four statues, all of which are in the Rijksmuseum garden. The statues originally stood in the garden of Bosch en Hoven, a country estate near Haarlem. They were made by Jan Pieter Baurscheit the Elder, an Antwerp architect and sculptor often engaged by patrons in the Dutch Republic. </p>

<p>The gardens surrounding the Rijksmuseum, also updated with the original Cuypers style in mind, offer a welcome rest and yet more aesthetic pleasures, displaying international sculpture and a brand new Asian Pavilion. Surrounded by water, this houses the Rijksmuseum collection of Asian art dating back to 2000 B.C. and includes a couple of magnificent 14th-century Japanese wooden temple guardians. The sculpture-studded gardens around the exterior are free to visit.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="rembrandt-looking-in-the-mirror"><strong>Rembrandt&#8217;s Portraits</strong></h2>

<p>One of Rembrandt&#8217;s most impressive skills was his ability to capture the inner workings of his subjects through their facial expressions. </p>

<p>His paintings and etches show a deep understanding of the human psyche, and he was able to express a wide range of emotions in his portraiture. In particular, his self-portraits are some of the most revealing and intimate images ever created. </p>

<div data-tiqets-widget="discovery" data-cards-layout="responsive" data-content-type="product" data-content-ids="703796,972886,978174" data-partner="tossitonline" data-tq-campaign="Rembrandt-Paintings"></div>
<p><script defer="" src="https://widgets.tiqets.com/loader.js"></script></p>

<p></p>

<p>Through these works, Rembrandt gives us a glimpse into his own soul, revealing his doubts, fears, and hopes. In doing so, he allows us to see our own humanity reflected back at us. As a result, Rembrandt&#8217;s portraits continue to resonate with viewers centuries after they were first created.</p>

<p>No other 17th-century artist produced as many self-portraits as the great Dutch painter Rembrandt van Rijn. From his early years as a rising talent in <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leiden" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Leiden</a> (the Netherlands) until shorty before his death, he routinely chose his own facial features as the subject of penetrating study. </p>

<a class="maxbutton-8 maxbutton maxbutton-follow-on-facebook" target="_blank" title="MORE PICS HERE!" rel="noopener" href="https://toursinamsterdam.com/tour/rijksmuseum-tickets/"><span class='mb-text'>I WANT TO LEARN MORE</span></a>

<p></p>

<p>He had good reason for doing so, for what model is as inexpensive, patient and readily available as Rembrandt himself? In this way he could practice endlessly. </p>

<p></p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="950" height="375" src="https://toursinamsterdam.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/rembrandt-house-museum-amsterdam-tickets.jpg" alt="Rembrandt House Museum Amsterdam" class="wp-image-2278" srcset="https://www.toursinamsterdam.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/rembrandt-house-museum-amsterdam-tickets.jpg 950w, https://www.toursinamsterdam.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/rembrandt-house-museum-amsterdam-tickets-300x118.jpg 300w, https://www.toursinamsterdam.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/rembrandt-house-museum-amsterdam-tickets-768x303.jpg 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 950px) 100vw, 950px" /></figure>

<p>Peering in the mirror he first perfected his drawing etching and painting techniques. He practiced rendering powerful contrasts of light and capturing subtle shadows. He made funny faces before the mirror learning how to convey all manner of emotions. </p>

<a class="maxbutton-8 maxbutton maxbutton-follow-on-facebook" target="_blank" title="CLICK HERE!" rel="nofollow noopener" href="https://www.tiqets.com/en/rijksmuseum-tickets-l127351/?partner=tossitonline&#038;tq_campaign=Rembrandt-Paintings"><span class='mb-text'>GET RIJKSMUSEUM TICKETS</span></a>

<p></p>

<p>Once Rembrandt had mastered that, he went on to portray himself in a variety of roles, garbed in old-fashioned, 16th-century clothes or biblical dress. Rembrandt became thoroughly familiar with his own face, and now we can, too.</p>

<blockquote class="wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow">
<p><em>Practice what you know, and it will help to make clear what you do not know.</em></p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1000" height="502" src="https://toursinamsterdam.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/Amsterdam-Rijksmuseum-Rembrandt-Painting.jpg" alt="rijksmuseum" class="wp-image-8025" srcset="https://www.toursinamsterdam.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/Amsterdam-Rijksmuseum-Rembrandt-Painting.jpg 1000w, https://www.toursinamsterdam.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/Amsterdam-Rijksmuseum-Rembrandt-Painting-300x151.jpg 300w, https://www.toursinamsterdam.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/Amsterdam-Rijksmuseum-Rembrandt-Painting-768x386.jpg 768w, https://www.toursinamsterdam.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/Amsterdam-Rijksmuseum-Rembrandt-Painting-280x140.jpg 280w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><em>Inside Amsterdam <a href="https://toursinamsterdam.com/rijksmuseum-in-amsterdam/">Rijksmuseum</a>.</em></figcaption></figure>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="rembrandt-paintings-self-portrait">Rembrandt Paintings Self-portrait</h3>

<p>As inexperienced as he is, the young Rembrandt does not shy away from experimenting. Here the light rakes his right cheek while the rest of Rembrandt&#8217;s face is enveloped in shadow. It takes a moment to realize that he is peering out of you. Rembrandt accentuated the curls of his tousled hair by drawing in the wet paint with the butt end of his paintbrush. </p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading" id="rembrandt-self-portrait-as-apostle-paul">Rembrandt Self Portrait as Apostle Paul</h4>

<figure class="wp-block-image"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="950" height="1000" src="https://toursinamsterdam.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Rembrandt-van-Rijn-Self-Portrait-1.jpg" alt="Rembrandt Paintings Paulus Petrus" class="wp-image-949" srcset="https://www.toursinamsterdam.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Rembrandt-van-Rijn-Self-Portrait-1.jpg 950w, https://www.toursinamsterdam.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Rembrandt-van-Rijn-Self-Portrait-1-285x300.jpg 285w, https://www.toursinamsterdam.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Rembrandt-van-Rijn-Self-Portrait-1-768x808.jpg 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 950px) 100vw, 950px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Self-portrait as the Apostle Paul, Rembrandt van Rijn, 1661</figcaption></figure>

<p>Rembrandt is 55 year old in this self-portrait, and he still looks at himself candidly. Here he assumes the guise of a personage from the Bible, the Apostle Paul. The sword protruding from his cloak and the manuscript in his hands are the apostle&#8217;s customary attributes. By using his own face, Rembrandt encouraged the viewer to engage personally with the saint.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="rembrandt-etching">Rembrandt etching</h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="950" height="446" src="https://toursinamsterdam.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Rembrandt-van-Rijn-Etchings-1.jpg" alt="Rembrandt van Rijn etchings" class="wp-image-956" srcset="https://www.toursinamsterdam.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Rembrandt-van-Rijn-Etchings-1.jpg 950w, https://www.toursinamsterdam.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Rembrandt-van-Rijn-Etchings-1-300x141.jpg 300w, https://www.toursinamsterdam.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Rembrandt-van-Rijn-Etchings-1-768x361.jpg 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 950px) 100vw, 950px" /></figure>

<p>Rembrandt derived much inspiration from the figures he came across outdoors. However, he did not etch out on the street. He produced his prints indoors, in his workshop. His observations are no less telling for that fact. Both the beggar couple and the poor wretch with the wooden leg seem to be calling out loud, while the peasant in the middle looks on expectantly. </p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Rembrandt in Amsterdam Red Light District</h3>

<p>Rembrandt van Rijn has been &#8211; like many other &#8211; to the <a href="https://toursinamsterdam.com/red-light-district-amsterdam/">Red Light District</a> too. </p>

<p>After all, he painted a painting in De Waag. One of the oldest buildings in Amsterdam, only 100 meters away from brothels and prostitutes. He registered his intention to marry in De Oude Kerk. The city church in the middle of the Red Light District. Or as the Dutch call it: De Wallen.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="rembrandt-s-family-as-model">Rembrandt&#8217;s Family as model</h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="950" height="837" src="https://toursinamsterdam.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Rembrandt-van-Rijn-Mother-Etching.jpg" alt="rembrandt's mother etching" class="wp-image-957" srcset="https://www.toursinamsterdam.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Rembrandt-van-Rijn-Mother-Etching.jpg 950w, https://www.toursinamsterdam.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Rembrandt-van-Rijn-Mother-Etching-300x264.jpg 300w, https://www.toursinamsterdam.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Rembrandt-van-Rijn-Mother-Etching-768x677.jpg 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 950px) 100vw, 950px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Rembrandt&#8217;s mother etching in 1631.</figcaption></figure>

<p>When Rembrandt still lived in Leiden, his mother and father were obvious choices as models. He depicted them regularly, closely studying their wrinkled skin of his father&#8217;s flowing beard. Other people in his immediate circle also served him as subjects, and he exhibited an unmistakeable fascination for characterful worn and aged heads. Initially they were exercises in capturing the signs of old age. </p>

<div data-tiqets-widget="discovery" data-cards-layout="responsive" data-content-type="product" data-content-ids="703796,972886,978174" data-partner="tossitonline" data-tq-campaign="Rembrandt-Paintings"></div>
<p><script defer="" src="https://widgets.tiqets.com/loader.js"></script></p>

<p>As his skill improved Rembrandt depicted his figures in increasingly larger formats, in oriental clothing or with a striking headdress, and preferably with a slight air of melancholy. And, a touch of fantasy was by no means to be avoided. </p>

<p>This type of depiction was called a &#8220;tronie&#8221; in the 17th-century. The genre &#8211; in which not the identity, but rather the picturesque quality of the figure is key &#8211; was extremely popular.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="rembrandt-paintings-stories-from-the-bible">Rembrandt Paintings: Stories from the bible</h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="950" height="945" src="https://toursinamsterdam.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Rembrandt-Van-Rijn-Bible-Painting.jpg" alt="Van Rijn Bible Art" class="wp-image-954" srcset="https://www.toursinamsterdam.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Rembrandt-Van-Rijn-Bible-Painting.jpg 950w, https://www.toursinamsterdam.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Rembrandt-Van-Rijn-Bible-Painting-150x150.jpg 150w, https://www.toursinamsterdam.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Rembrandt-Van-Rijn-Bible-Painting-300x298.jpg 300w, https://www.toursinamsterdam.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Rembrandt-Van-Rijn-Bible-Painting-768x764.jpg 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 950px) 100vw, 950px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">What distinguishes Rembrandt, is his capacity to make the Bible stories human.</figcaption></figure>

<p>The bible was an important source of inspiration for every ambitious 17th-century artist. Rembrandt rendered countless biblical stories, from both the Old and the New Testament. Here, too, it is clear just how good he was at telling a story. </p>

<p>Rembrandt unerringly chose the most striking moment. Sometimes this is the dramatic high point, sometimes precisely the instant preceding it, when everyone is still holding his or her breath and awaiting the climax. </p>

<p>Like a stage director, he groups his characters together and uses gestures and facial expressions to clarify what is transpiring. </p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1000" height="766" src="https://toursinamsterdam.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/Rembrandt-in-Rijksmuseum.jpg" alt="Rembrandt van rijn" class="wp-image-8027" srcset="https://www.toursinamsterdam.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/Rembrandt-in-Rijksmuseum.jpg 1000w, https://www.toursinamsterdam.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/Rembrandt-in-Rijksmuseum-300x230.jpg 300w, https://www.toursinamsterdam.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/Rembrandt-in-Rijksmuseum-768x588.jpg 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px" /></figure>

<p>What also distinguishes Rembrandt, is his capacity to make the Bible stories human, and the emotions involved palpable. It concerns love, joy, sorrow, desperation or relief. Note just how skillfully he rendered Abraham, who bows deeply when he suddenly realizes that the guests he has invited to share a meal with him are not ordinary mortals. </p>

<p>Displayed in the gallery of the <a href="https://toursinamsterdam.com/rijksmuseum-in-amsterdam/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Rijksmuseum</a> are Rembrandt&#8217;s Old Testament scenes in which he unfailingly goest straight to the heart of the matter, depicting it in a personal and poignant manner.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="rembrandt-paintings-an-old-woman-reading">Rembrandt paintings: an old woman reading</h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="950" height="863" src="https://toursinamsterdam.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Rembrandt-van-Rijn-old-woman-reading.jpg" alt="rembrandt paintings woman old" class="wp-image-960" srcset="https://www.toursinamsterdam.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Rembrandt-van-Rijn-old-woman-reading.jpg 950w, https://www.toursinamsterdam.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Rembrandt-van-Rijn-old-woman-reading-300x273.jpg 300w, https://www.toursinamsterdam.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Rembrandt-van-Rijn-old-woman-reading-768x698.jpg 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 950px) 100vw, 950px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Rembrandt old woman reading. Most likely Prophetess Anna.</figcaption></figure>

<p>Here the light comes from behind the old woman: the brightest illumination falls on the book and her wrinkled hand, modelled with paint. Look at how Rembrandt painted her hand, unbelievable!</p>

<p>Her face remains in the shadow. She could be the prophetess Anna, an elderly widow who, according to the Bible, served God through fasting and prayer. Tradition has it that Rembrandt&#8217;s mother posed for this painting. </p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="rembrandt-jan-six-1647">Rembrandt Jan Six 1647</h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="950" height="1000" src="https://toursinamsterdam.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Rembrandt-van-Reijn-Jan-Six-painting.jpg" alt="Jan Six House Etching" class="wp-image-958" srcset="https://www.toursinamsterdam.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Rembrandt-van-Reijn-Jan-Six-painting.jpg 950w, https://www.toursinamsterdam.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Rembrandt-van-Reijn-Jan-Six-painting-285x300.jpg 285w, https://www.toursinamsterdam.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Rembrandt-van-Reijn-Jan-Six-painting-768x808.jpg 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 950px) 100vw, 950px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Jan Six etched by Van Rijn in 1647.</figcaption></figure>

<p>Rembrandt was befriended for some time with the well-to-do <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Many-Lives-Jan-Six/dp/9045034808" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener" aria-label="Jan Six (opens in a new tab)">Jan Six</a>, who later served as mayor of Amsterdam. He portrays him here in a highly informal manner, standing near an open window and reading a book. The detailed, skillful rendering of the dark room, in particular, is an unsurpassed feat in the art of etching. </p>

<p>Maria&#8217;s father amassed enormous wealth through trade in iron and arms. In 1639 she was 20 years old and still unmarried. In this portrait, she makes no bones of the fact that she has money to spend. Her neckerchief is made of the finest, almost transparent lace, and she wears a fortune in pearls. Fans, like that in her left hand, were still rare and precious accessoires in 1639.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Demand For Rembrandt Paintings</h3>

<p>What would happen to the demand for Rembrandt paintings if the <a href="https://www.amsterdamredlightdistricttour.com/amsterdam-stock-exchange/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">stock market</a> undergoes a boom?</p>

<p>It is likely that the demand for Rembrandt paintings would increase during a stock market boom. As individuals and businesses have more disposable income, they may be more likely to invest in luxury items such as fine art. Additionally, a strong stock market may also boost investor confidence and make them more willing to take on risk, which could further drive demand for high-value items like Rembrandt paintings. However, it&#8217;s worth noting that demand for art is affected by many other factors beyond economic conditions and it&#8217;s hard to predict exactly how it would be impacted.</p>
